Wildside was founded in 2007 by Richard and Alison and has provided memorable outdoor experiences and education to children for over 15 years.
In April 2026, Harry and Caitlin Johnston will be taking Wildside forward. Harry is looking forward to this next chapter of continuing the brilliant work that Alison and Richard have started, to ensure a smooth transition both Richard and Alison will continue to be part of the team throughout the 2026 season.
The Wildside Team
Harry Johnston - Director / Activity Leader
I grew up in rural Gloucestershire, where being outdoors was part of everyday life. From sport and exploring the countryside to time spent with family, these early experiences shaped my appreciation for the natural world and its importance to wellbeing. I later studied Geography at the University of Exeter, where my interest in how people interact with the environment continued to grow.
My career has spanned a range of roles within the food and hospitality industry, including time working with Rick Stein in Padstow and later as a cheesemaker at Daylesford Organic Farm, where I was part of a team achieving multiple Great Taste Awards. This has shaped my passion for helping children understand where food comes from and encouraging thoughtful, informed choices.
Over the past seven years, I’ve been a full time father to our three children, an experience that has reinforced my belief in the importance of outdoor learning for children’s confidence, creativity, and wellbeing. Alongside this, I serve as Chairman at Upottery Preschool, where I’ve seen first hand the value of early years education and the joy that being outside brings.
Wildside brings together everything I care about, family, the outdoors, and creating meaningful experiences for children. I’m excited to lead the day to day running of the business, build strong relationships with schools and families, and continue delivering memorable outdoor experiences.
Caitlin Johnston - Director
Growing up on a working sheep farm in East Devon shaped who I am today. It taught me the value of responsibility, the importance of relationships, and the confidence that comes from spending time outdoors and caring for animals. Those early experiences sparked a lasting passion for child development through rural activity and for improving children’s access to the countryside.
I studied at the Royal Agricultural University before building a career in the rural sector. A particularly formative experience was spending several months working with Farms for City Children in Gloucestershire, founded by Michael Morpurgo. I was inspired by the charity’s ethos and the profound impact it had on the children who visited, an experience that has stayed with me ever since.
Now, as a mother, I see first hand the positive influence that outdoor and rural experiences have on my own children. It makes me incredibly excited about the future of Wildside and the opportunities it will create for others.
As a rural chartered surveyor, I have a broad understanding of agriculture, food, and countryside management. I currently work for a telecommunications provider supporting the rollout of digital connectivity to rural communities through the government funded Project Gigabit.
With a busy professional and family life, my role at Wildside is largely behind the scenes, where I support my husband Harry in the running and development of the business.
Richard Whiteside - Founder / Activity Leader
A Biology graduate and qualified teacher, Richard taught Science and English for 3 years at a remote school in Papua New Guinea. He was then a Science teacher for 11 years at Uffculme School in Devon, where he met Alison.
A keen naturalist, Richard is also a certified Advanced Bushcraft Practitioner and Archery Leader. He is a musician and barn-dance caller in his spare time!
His favourite thing about Wildside is seeing children overcome challenges and fears.
Alison Whiteside - Founder / Catering Manager
Alison grew up in the Blackdown Hills, where she developed her love of nature.
A mother of 3, she has worked in local primary and secondary schools, and she ran a playgroup in Ireland for 5 years!
The giant cakes that Alison bakes with Wildside eggs are always popular, as is the fresh bread she bakes for breakfasts!
Her favourite thing about Wildside is hearing the sounds of happy children playing in the meadow.
Becky Troy-Brown - Chef
Becky has taken over cooking the evening meal, which she prepares from scratch using Alison’s recipe. She serves drinks and ice creams from the kitchen as well as food, and helps children to choose their pizza toppings!
Her favourite thing about Wildside is meeting the children, and them telling her how much they’ve enjoyed her delicious food!
Tom Snaith - Activity Leader
Tom has a long association with Wildside. He came on a Year 8 school residential, he then volunteered for his bronze DofE and worked for us after his university terms finished.
After a break of 3 years, he re-joined our team in 2025, and he’ll be back in 2026 for some of the camps.
Tom enjoys hiking and ultra-distance running. He recently completed 50 miles of the SW coast path in under 12 hours!
Tom’s favourite thing about Wildside is seeing children enjoying the great outdoors, and chatting to them while they wait for their pizzas to cook.
